Motorola has been one of the key players in the smartphone business for a while but they have suffered from innovation Amnesia (For lack of a better description) in the past few years. If you can remember the days of the iconic Motorola Razr which was once the highest selling phone at the time of its release you would know that motorola has not been able to match the success of those glory days in the recent past. However Google has decided to stick their hands into Motorola's pie since they gobbled up major stakes in Motorola's Mobile Phone development division, we expect to see a boost in innovation and a better marketing campaign. Google has already pledge to spend close to $1Billion on marketing/Advertisement.
That said, Motorola Recently launched their latest flagship device the Moto X, this is the first fruit of the marriage between Motorola and Google. Based on the several leaks of this device we have seen, I believe most people would be expecting to see a device close in design to Google's Nexus range of devices but Motorola has opted to take a different route. Motorola has decided to pay more attention to the user experience than the specs. Motorola is not the first to use this design principle as both Apple and Windows Phone have been capitalising on User experience rather than High-end specs.
They intend to revolutionize the User experience by providing Elaborate Customization options for the phone. Using a special online portal called the MotoBuilder, users would be able to place orders and design what they want their Moto X to look like, there would be 18 different colours to choose from available in 7 different shades, there would also be some limited edition versions that would have special wooden designs available in Teak, Rosewood, Ebony and Bamboo. The customizations don't stop there as customers would be able to choose what wallpapers and boot animation they want pre-installed on the phone. This sounds like a gruesome job and in order to maintain their build quality and quick delivery, the phone would be assembled in Motorola's new factory in forth Worth Texas and Motorola has employed 2000 workers dedicated to this job.
Revolutionizing the User experience and by extension the smartphone industry does not end with elaborate customization to the exterior casing of the phone and Motorola understands this so instead of packing the Moto X with mouth-watering specs they have decide to create useful features/applications that would help the average joe in his daily activities amongst them is the Touchless Control feature that enables users speak to their device and instruct it to carry out a set of commands without having to physically touching the phone, this is something futuristic, straight out of a sci-fi movie just like Tony Stark talks to Jarvis in the Iron Man movie series but instead of calling Jarvis like Tony Stark does, we say "OK Google Now" to wake up the device. On the hardware end, Motorola has done little to impress us since they have decide to capitalise on the user experience, they have kept the hardware basic. The device runs on a 2200mAH battery that Motorola claims can serve up to 24 hours between charges while running on LTE and it is powered by a special Snapdragon S4 chip with two special cores one for "Contextual Computing" and the other for "Natural Linguistic Processing" which handles the Touchless Control feature we talked about above. The device comes in either 16GB or 32GB variant and has no MicroSD support but Google has thrown in extra 50GB cloud storage to make do for the lack of SD support but this might not be a welcome idea if you live in a country like Nigeria where you have to pay tooth and nail in data subscriptions to access data stored on the cloud.

There are other tons of features and applications that Motorola has packed into this medium spec device we are not sure if this phone would be available in Nigeria and other parts of Africa because of the various customizations attached to it, however it might be available in the stock black or white colours. We would do a full review of it hopefully when we are able to get our hands on the device. follow us on twitter @technerdng and make sure to subscribe to our blog and RSS feed for speedy updates.
